A familiar face in a new position: Kafiat Beckley heads up Cougar Center

Beckley’s position is full-time with a focus on customer service, financial aid, registration and admissions processes. The job will be roughly “20%” supervisory, and mostly as a coordinator for the team in the Cougar Center. Beckley said, “My main focus is students. The Cougar Center is a place where anyone can come to get answers, from a question about financial aid, to where a certain event is happening on campus.” The Cougar Center’s goal is to work as a team to be a strong, knowledgeable resource not only for students for also for anyone on campus.

Over the summer and the upcoming school year Beckley said, “There will be a lot of staff training to make sure we can help students as much as possible.” The main focus of all departments in Student Services is to help students who are not sure where to go. Beckley said, “We know where to find the answers you need and we can point you in the right direction. Since our job is interfacing with students, we want to make sure we can give them the best help possible. The things we deal here should be the least of students’ problems.”

Another priority over the upcoming year is to increase the number of people on staff so as to more readily help students and visitors. There are also plans in motion to increase professional development for both regular employees and student employees. As Beckley is moving into the supervisor position, a new face will soon be present at the Cashier desk.

Beckley is also the contact person for matters concerning the Cougar Food Pantry. The Food Pantry is for students who are in need of food and the process to apply for and receive food is completely anonymous. Donations are also accepted with emphasis on priority items such as peanut butter, canned tuna and boxed milk. These can be dropped off at the Cougar Center.

A confidential online request form for food is available at studentaffairs.vancouver.wsu.edu/cougar-food-pantry. There are also links to other resources for students, including where to find clothing, counseling services, assistance with utilities and how to navigate different types of insurance.
