The 14th annual Vampire’s Masquerade Ball offers dancing, food and fun

Draped in deep reds and blacks, people walk into the ballroom in Victorian and gothic attire, ready to spend an evening on the mahogany floor of the Melody Ballroom. Women from the Night Flight Aerial Performance Company contort and fly through the air as DJs pound out industrial-heavy beats making the crowd converse, roar and dance. As the clock strikes twelve, the DJ steps aside and the band In a World takes the stage, pick up their classical instruments, and begin the midnight waltz.

With three DJs, live performances and a buffet catered by local restaurants, the 14th annual Vampire’s Masquerade Ball will be a night of gothic entertainment. The ball hosts nearly 800 people, including international guests. Over 30 vendors selling dark and eclectic wares and items also attend the event.

Lady Raven’s Vampire’s Masquerade Ball will take place on June 4 with the doors opening at 9 p.m. Only those wearing their vampire, steampunk or cyberpunk best will be permitted entrance, street clothes are prohibited.

The ball first began in 2002 in the Back Room in Portland, and within a year, the attendance rate doubled. It has steadily grown in popularity over the years, and now has guests trickling in from all over the world. In 2005, current event coordinator Lady Raven began managing the ball, and she helped it grow into a much bigger production.

Photography is permitted, though event organizers ask that guests do not photograph each other without asking; videography is prohibited.

The event is open to everyone 21 and over and is LGBQT friendly. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $45 at vampireballpdx.com or at the door for $50. Questions about the ball can be sent to Lady Raven, at vampireball@gmail.com.

The Melody Ballroom is located at 615 SE Alder St. Portland, Ore. 97214. The Ballroom is wheelchair accessible.
